Commissioners

  • The governing body of the Housing Authority is the Board of Commissioners, which consists of five members appointed by the Mayor of the City of Commerce. The Board serves as the policymaking and oversight body for the Housing Authority, providing governance, strategic direction, and leadership in support of the agency’s mission and operations. Commissioners serve on a voluntary basis and contribute their time, experience, and professional judgment to ensure the effective administration of Housing Authority programs and services. The current Board members are:

 

  • J. Eddie Smith, Chairman

  • Wayne Pierce, Vice Chairman

  • Dick King, Commissioner

  • J.K. Smith, Commissioner

  • Joe Green, Resident Commissioner

The Executive Director serves as secretary of the board as well as administering the day-to-day operations of the Authority and implementing the policies set by the Board.

 

Our Mission

The mission of the Housing Authority of Commerce, Texas is to provide safe, quality, and affordable housing while fostering opportunities for independence, stability, and improved quality of life for the families and individuals we serve. In carrying out this mission, the Housing Authority supports the broader goals of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to expand housing opportunities, encourage economic self-sufficiency, and promote communities free from discrimination.

The Housing Authority owns and operates 192 public housing units located throughout the City of Commerce, serving low-income families, elderly residents, and individuals with disabilities. We are committed to responsible stewardship of public resources, strong community partnerships, and the preservation of housing that is both affordable and well maintained.

To fulfill our mission, the Housing Authority strives to:

  • Expand and preserve the availability of safe, decent, and affordable housing.

  • Ensure fair and equal access to housing opportunities for all individuals.

  • Encourage resident self-sufficiency, personal growth, and economic advancement.

  • Strengthen neighborhoods and enhance the overall quality of life within the community.

  • Maintain sound fiscal management and operational integrity in all Housing Authority programs.

 

Those We Serve

The Housing Authority of Commerce recognizes the residents as the ultimate customers. The Authority meets the housing needs of more than 192 low-income families. The Housing Authority is committed to productive results with sensitivity and concern for the dignity of every person served.

 

Funding

The Housing Authority receives annual funding through HUD's Operating Fund and Capital Fund programs. These resources are used to support the administration, maintenance, preservation, and improvement of public housing properties and related activities in accordance with federal program requirements.
